The tasks of the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Lisbon will be assumed by the Ministry of foreign affairs
At its session on 30 May 2012, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted decisions on the closure of the embassies in Dublin (on 31 October 2012), Helsinki (on 15 October 2012), Lisbon (on 15 September 2012) and Stockholm (on 15 September 2012). On the basis of these decisions, the President of the Republic of Slovenia signed the orders on the closure of the above embassies.
Concurrently, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted decisions on the closure of the Consulate-General in New York (on 31 October 2012), and the Consulate in Düsseldorf (on 15 September 2012).
The decisions of the Government were previously endorsed by the National Assembly Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The decision on the closures came as a result of the difficult financial and economic situation in Slovenia, which has required the Government to adopt austerity measures that affect all spheres of its work, including foreign affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia will continue to endeavour to strengthen and deepen, both bilaterally and multilaterally, relations with the countries where diplomatic missions and consular posts are to be closed. The Ministry will also continue to provide adequate protection and assistance to Slovenian citizens residing in these countries.
